Suspicion Served Cold

Olivia drove to the restaurant, her mind consumed with thoughts of Gabriel and Ayuna. She couldn’t shake the feeling that Ayuna was hiding something, something dark and dangerous.

Determined to uncover the truth, Olivia vowed to herself to reveal Ayuna’s dark secret. “You’re hiding something, and I won’t rest until I know what it is,” Olivia muttered as she pulled into the parking lot, still deep in thought.

As they all sat down at the table, Olivia plastered a smile on her face, but inside, her suspicions were running wild. Ayuna seemed too perfect, too put-together. Olivia couldn’t shake the feeling that there was a sinister secret lurking behind her smile.

Meanwhile, Ayuna progressed through the evening, every action like the movement of a dance she had choreographed.

“By the way, I hope you two don’t mind, I ordered us appetizers. Speaking of which—” Ayuna said, removing her phone from the table and slipping it into her bag to give the waiter more space to place the platter.

“…And here you go. Bon appétit! May I start you all off with some water while you look at the menu?” asked the courteous waiter, the sweet sound of hospitality heavy with each word.

“Yes, please. Room temperature for—” Gabriel began, suddenly stopping mid-sentence as his eyes locked onto the appetizers.

“Oh my, is that mango and avocado?” Gabriel asked out loud, addressing no one in particular, his delight taking over full motor control.

“Yes, these are cr—” the waiter tried to interject, his response overshadowed by Gabriel’s animated reaction to the first bite.

“Oh, god. Mhm, mhm.” [chewing sounds]

“There is something amazing happening, and it’s happening in my mouth,” said Gabriel, his eyes closed as if receiving transmissions from the heavens.

“You are so dramatic, Gabe. Let me try one,” responded Olivia, taking a piece from the platter. Gabriel quickly grabbed her wrist.

“Ah, no. You won’t be having any of this, Liv.”

A Taste of Betrayal

“Are these crab cakes?” Gabriel asked the waiter, still holding Olivia’s wrist, his protective grasp catching Ayuna’s attention.

“Yes!” replied the waiter. “These are Crab Cakes With Mango-Avocado Relish.”

“Right. One bite of this, love, and you go bye-bye,” Gabriel said to Olivia in a cheeky but loving tone, turning to Ayuna. “Remember I told you, babe? Olivia is deathly allergic to crab.”

“Oh right! I’m sorry, I must have forgotten,” Ayuna said, giving her best impression of surprise. “I saw mangos and avocados, and I know how much you two love that, so… I feel awful, Olivia. I’m sorry. Thank God Gabriel realized in time.” Ayuna continued, trying to deflect the situation, her tone a mix of concern and innocence.

But Olivia wasn’t convinced. She could feel the weight of Ayuna’s gaze, her suspicion growing with each passing moment.

“It’s fine, Ayuna,” Olivia replied, forcing a smile despite the unease gnawing at her. “It’s just a coincidence, I guess. Thank you, Gabe, for catching that.”

Gabriel nodded, his expression still soft and upbeat as he released Olivia’s wrist. “No problem, Liv. I wouldn’t want anything to happen to you.”

“May I get you another appetizer? It’s on the house,” the courteous waiter asked Olivia, trying to show his appreciation for her not dying on his shift.

“Maybe just a drink. A double shot of whiskey on the rocks, please,” Olivia requested, managing to turn the dial up a little on her forced smile.

Gabriel’s expression suddenly changed to serious, mixed with curiosity. He knew Olivia only ordered a double shot of whiskey when she really had something serious on her mind.

Gabriel sat up, bracing himself slightly, realizing it might be a rough night after all.

Fork in the Road

As they continued their meal, the atmosphere grew increasingly tense.

Ayuna’s attempts to steer the conversation away from the incident only fueled Olivia’s doubts. She couldn’t shake the feeling that Ayuna was hiding something, and now after the “coincidence” tonight, she was sure of it.

Finally, unable to contain her suspicions any longer, Olivia turned to Ayuna, her voice steady but tinged with urgency. “Ayuna, can we talk for a minute?”

Ayuna’s persona flickered for a split second before she regained her composure, her eyes narrowing slightly. “Of course, Olivia. What’s on your mind?”

Gabriel held his breath, his jaw tense, trying to chew his meal, his eyes widened to max capacity, watching both women take their stance.

Olivia took a deep breath, her gaze unwavering as she met Ayuna’s eyes. “I can’t shake the feeling that you’re hiding something, Ayuna. Ever since Gabriel’s diagnosis, things have been… off. And tonight, with the crab incident, I can’t help but wonder if it was really just a coincidence.”

Ayuna’s expression remained neutral, but Olivia could sense a flicker of unease beneath the surface. “Olivia, I assure you, there’s nothing for you to worry about. I would never do anything to harm Gabriel or anyone else.”

“But why all the secrecy?” Olivia pressed, her voice growing more insistent. “Why the sudden urge to distance Gabriel from me? It’s like you’re trying to drive a wedge between us.”

Ayuna’s gaze hardened, her demeanor shifting subtly. “I’m not trying to drive a wedge, Olivia. I care about Gabriel deeply, and I want what’s best for him. Sometimes that means making difficult decisions for his well-being.”

Olivia’s suspicion only deepened at Ayuna’s response. She could sense the tension crackling between them, a silent battle of wills unfolding beneath the surface.

“I don’t buy it, Ayuna,” Olivia said, her voice firm. “There’s something you’re not telling us, and I won’t rest until I find out what it is.”

Ayuna flickered once again, uncertainty crossing her features before she composed herself once more. “I understand your concern, Olivia. But I assure you, there’s nothing for you to worry about. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to use the restroom.”

With that, Ayuna rose from the table, her movements deliberate as she made her way toward the restroom, leaving Olivia and Gabriel alone with the lingering tension hanging heavy in the air.

The Surgeon’s Hasty Retreat

Ayuna returned from the bathroom, her smile fixed in place as she rejoined Gabriel and Olivia at the table.

Olivia, determined to unravel the mystery surrounding Ayuna, tried to steer the conversation back to their earlier discussion, but Ayuna deftly deflected, focusing on the menu instead.

Just as the tension between them was about to reach its peak, Ayuna’s cell phone rang, shattering the uneasy atmosphere.

With a sense of urgency in her voice, Ayuna answered the call and spoke briefly.

“Hello… Yes, this is Dr. Hartman.” Ayuna spoke with a regained composure, her demeanor transformed into one of authority and focus.

“Get an OR and begin prepping the patient. I’ll be there in 30 minutes.”

“Gabriel, I have to go. One of my patients needs me,” Ayuna said to Gabriel, already on her feet standing next to his chair.

“I overheard, love. Please, go, I’ll see you later.”

Ayuna leaned in, surprising Gabriel with a short but passionate kiss as if marking her territory.

Unlocking her lips from Gabriel’s, she glanced over to Olivia, reluctantly but convincingly bidding her farewell, their eyes locked in a silent battle of suspicion and mistrust.

The perfectly orchestrated night Ayuna had planned had crumbled before her eyes, leaving a bitter taste in her mouth.

But she couldn’t think about that now. At this very moment, the most important thing to her was her patient. She would just have to deal with Olivia after.

In the looming shadow of Olivia’s suspicions, Ayuna knew she had to act swiftly to protect her secrets and secure her hold over Gabriel.

As Olivia and Ayuna broke their glance that lasted only seconds, but what felt like several eternities to Gabriel, Ayuna picked up her pace to her car, disappearing through the exit.

With each passing moment, the risk of her carefully assembled construct crumbling grew exponentially. She understood that if Olivia’s suspicions were allowed to fester unchecked, they could ultimately lead to Ayuna’s downfall.

As she drove from the parking lot, Ayuna felt a surge of determination coursing through her veins.

She couldn’t let Olivia unravel the web she had spun so carefully. No, she needed to act swiftly and decisively to eliminate the threat Olivia posed before it was too late.

Meanwhile, back in the restaurant, Olivia and Gabriel sat across from each other, the atmosphere heavy with unspoken tension. Olivia couldn’t shake the feeling of unease that had now settled over her about Ayuna.

“That woman doesn’t like me, Gabriel,” Olivia finally spoke, breaking the silence.

Gabriel reached across the table, gently taking Olivia’s hand in his. “Liv, Ayuna is just… protective. She cares about me, and I care about her. You both mean the world to me, and I know it’s not easy, but we’ll find a way to get along.”

Olivia sighed, her frustration evident in her voice. “I’m trying, Gabe. I really am. But there’s something about her… I can’t quite put my finger on it.”

Gabriel squeezed Olivia’s hand reassuringly. “I know, Liv. Just give it time. Maybe things will get better.”

“Plus, you like my artwork, maybe you’ll like hers. That’s something you two could bond over,” Gabriel said, smiling at Olivia with a hopeful glint in his eyes.

“She’s an artist?” Olivia asked with a curious expression on her face.

“Yeah… she’s actually pretty good. Maybe even better than me,” Gabriel said, looking off lightly as if trailing a thought.

“You see, Liv. There’s a lot I bet you two don’t know about each other. Who knows, maybe you two will find something to bond over.”

“Who knows, Gabe? Maybe…”

Olivia nodded, though her suspicions remained unresolved. Deep down, she knew there was more to Ayuna than met the eye, and she vowed to uncover the truth, no matter the cost.
