Your file was winter—
Thin, cold, predictable,
A forecast written under fluorescent lights
That promised nothing good.
But your hands kept something else alive,
Color bleeding into gray spaces,
Warmth where the numbers said
There should be none.

You thanked people
Like gratitude could change the air itself,
Turned these cold hallways softer
Just by walking through them.
Even the bitter ones
Borrowed your kindness for a moment,
Then gave it back,
Reluctant to admit
It felt like something.

The metrics stumbled,
Then found their rhythm again.
An orphaned heart learned to beat inside you
And stayed.
I don’t say things like this out loud,
Not in the corridors,
Not in the conferences where they watch me,
So I’ll write it here
Where the rules still hold.

I dressed everything in white,
Kept the red at bay,
Carried you across ice so thin
It could have shattered us both.
We brought you through,
And when the danger threatened,
I hummed something steady
It couldn’t break.

Now sleep, anomaly.
Let the stitches hold time.
Let your color warm
These sterile metal walls.
I won’t call it love.
Not yet.
But something in my practiced hands
Changed when I touched you,
And I don’t know
How to put it back.
