A Surgeon’s Desperate Race Against Time

[Blip… Blip. Blip… Blip]

As the room pulsed with urgency, Dr. Hartman stood momentarily frozen, her gaze fixed on the rhythmic blips of the cardiac monitor. The steady beat echoed through the room, a haunting reminder of the delicate balance between life and death.

For a fleeting moment, time seemed to stand still as Dr. Hartman’s mind raced with a whirlwind of emotions. Doubt and fear threatened to cloud her thoughts, overshadowing her usual calm demeanor. The weight of responsibility bore down on her shoulders, the enormity of the situation pressing in from all sides.

Then, like a sudden jolt, a nurse’s voice cut through the silence, breaking Dr. Hartman from her trance-like state.

“Doctor… doctor”

“Dr. Hartman, we need your guidance,” the nurse called out, her voice a beacon of clarity.

With a sharp intake of breath, Dr. Hartman snapped back into reality.

“Continue to monitor vital signs closely. We need frequent assessments of cardiac function, neurological status, and overall hemodynamic stability,” she instructed.

Dr. Hartman, her demeanor resolute yet tinged with urgency, turned to the nurse in charge of Gabriel, her eyes searching for answers amidst the chaos of the hospital room.

“Nurse, what’s the status from the transplant team?” she asked, her voice steady but loaded with concern.

The nurse hesitates for a moment before responding, “Doctor, they don’t have any hearts matching Gabriel’s blood type at the moment. It could be at least a week before a suitable donor becomes available.”

Dr. Hartman’s expression tightened with determination. “A week is too long,” she asserts, her voice unwavering. “We don’t have that kind of time.”

Turning her attention back to Gabriel’s bedside, Dr. Hartman issued her instructions to the nurse. “Monitor him closely, and let me know immediately if there are any changes in his condition.”

I will get you a heart. I won’t allow you to die on me,” Dr Hartman murmured, her voice barely audible but carrying a weight of dark determination.

“Excuse me, Dr.?” asked the nurse.

“Nothing. Call me immediately if anything changes.”

With that, Dr. Hartman strode purposefully out of the hospital room, her steps measured and determined.

The nurse, wondering if she heard correctly what the Dr said and catching the subtle undertone, felt a chill run down her spine, as though sensing the full gravity of Dr. Hartman’s unspoken intentions.

A shiver raced down the nurse’s spine, an eerie feeling creeping over her like a cloak of shadows. It was as if the very air crackled with the intensity of Dr. Hartman’s resolve, leaving a lingering sense of foreboding.

With a final glance over her shoulder, Dr. Hartman disappeared down the corridor, her steps echoing ominously in the nurse’s ears. The hospital corridor seemed to swallow her whole, leaving behind an unsettling aura of uncertainty that hung heavy in the air.

Unraveling the Threads of Betrayal

Back in the present…

Two weeks had passed since Gabriel’s release from the hospital. He now found himself sitting in his apartment across from the person who brought him back from the brink of death.

As they laughed and talked, Gabriel’s mind drifted back to a time when he had sat in the same spot, feeling helpless and defeated.

“You know, Ayuna. I remember sitting in this same living room a few months ago, thinking my life was coming to an end. Before Liv showed me that article about you, I was ready to die.”

It was then that he realized how much Olivia’s unwavering support had meant to him, how her words had kept him holding on to life.

Lost in his thoughts, Gabriel didn’t notice Ayuna’s gaze intensifying, her eyes clouded with jealousy. She could sense that he was thinking about Olivia, and it bothered her more than ever.

Ayuna had managed to suppress her jealousy before, but now it was resurfacing with a vengeance. She knew she had to find a way to tear Gabriel and Olivia apart.

Just as Ayuna’s jealousy intensified, there was a knock on the door. Startled, Ayuna glanced at Gabriel, anxiety flickering across her face. “Are you expecting someone?” she asked, her voice tinged with an uneasiness she couldn’t hide.

“No, I’m not.” Gabriel shook his head, rising from his seat to answer the door. As he opened it, Olivia stood there, a concerned look etched on her face. Behind her, Dexter, her loyal dog, wagged his tail excitedly.

“Hey, Gabe,” Olivia greeted, stepping into the apartment. “I was passing by and thought I’d check on you.”

“I’m sorry, I didn’t realize you had company. Hi, Dr Hartmann.” Olivia greeted Ayuna, the two sharing an awkward hello.

“Hi, Olivia. Nice seeing you again.”

Ayuna watched their interaction, trying to mask her jealousy behind a forced smile. She knew Olivia meant well, but seeing her presence only fueled her insecurity.

Dexter, sensing the tension in the room, started growling softly, his fur standing on end. Ayuna’s heart skipped a beat as the dog’s gaze fixed on her.

Noticing the sudden change in Dexter’s behavior, Olivia’s concern deepened. She watched Ayuna carefully, her eyes narrowing as she caught a glimpse of something on Ayuna’s face—a fleeting look of malice that didn’t belong.

“What’s wrong, Dexter?” Olivia whispered, her voice filled with worry. “Why are you acting like this?”

Ayuna quickly regained her composure, offering an excuse. “I think he’s just not used to seeing new people, that’s all.”

The Killer’s Twist

Olivia’s suspicion lingered, her eyes locked with Ayuna’s. Their relationship has not been the same since Olivia saw her kissing Gabriel back at the hospital. Apart from the resentment, there was something else about Ayuna’s demeanor that sent alarm bells ringing in Olivia’s mind.

As Gabriel jumped in to diffuse the tension, Ayuna felt a wave of relief wash over her. She knew she had to be careful, to keep her deadly secret hidden. But with Olivia’s intuition, Ayuna’s web of lies was sitting precariously behind a curtain of discovery.

Things went on, the mood easing slightly, with laughter forced and smiles strained. Ayuna couldn’t shake the feeling that Olivia was onto her, that she saw through the façade. Olivia in turn, determined to protect her best friend, vowed to uncover whatever secrets Ayuna was hiding.

After a few long minutes of chatting, Olivia bid her goodbyes, the uneasiness in the air undeniable. Gabriel walked her to the door, his mind swirling with conflicting emotions. He can’t deny the connection he feels with Ayuna, but Olivia’s presence sparks something deep within him.

A storm was brewing, tensions rising, and the fragile balance that held their lives together was on the brink of collapse.

Little did they know, the web of secrets they were entangled in would forever change their lives, and the truth that lay hidden would soon come crashing down on them.

Olivia drove home, her mind active with replays of the interaction with Ayuna back at Gabriel’s apartment.

“You sensed it too, didn’t you, boy” Olivia confirmed with Decter.

“Ruff, ruff” responded dexter.

“It’s not because I’m jealous, there is something weird about her. I’m going to find out what it is”

Olivia’s mind was racing with what if’s. What if she hadn’t read that article? What if she and Gabriel had gone to another doctor? What if she and Gabriel…

“I can’t take this, I need to listen to something.”
